Mercury General Corp. reported net income of $68.2 million ($1.25 per share- diluted) in the third quarter 2006 compared with $73 million ($1.33 per share-diluted) for the same period in 2005. For the first nine months of 2006, net income was $164.7 million ($3.01 per share-diluted) compared with net income of $207 million ($3.78 per share-diluted) for the same period in 2005. Included in net income are net realized investment gains, net of tax, of $1.7 million ($0.03 per share-diluted) in the third quarter of 2006 compared with net realized investment gains, net of tax, of $5 million ($0.09 per share-diluted) for the same period in 2005, and net realized investment gains, net of tax, of $8.7 million ($0.16 per share-diluted) for the first nine months of 2006 compared with net realized investment gains, net of tax, of $10.0 million ($0.18 per share-diluted) for the same period in 2005.
Company-wide net premiums written were $776.2 million in the third quarter 2006, a 1.7 percent increase over third quarter 2005 net premiums written of $762.9 million, and were approximately $2.3 billion for the first nine months of 2006, a 3.7 percent increase over the same period in 2005. California net premiums written were $573.1 million in the third quarter of 2006, an increase of 5.1% over the same period in 2005, and were approximately $1.7 billion for the first nine months of 2006, a 5.9 percent increase over the same period in 2005. California’s biggest auto insurer, State Farm, put into motion a plan to bring down the price of it auto insurance coverage by a average of 8 percent, and move away from it standard of determining rates by geographic location.
This new plan is coming about, probably due in part to the stream of insurers who are brining their auto insurance quotes and rates into sync with regulations that were introduced by California insurance commissioner John Garamendi.
Garamendi’s statues require insurers to base their premiums on a driver’s record, experience and miles driven, rather than by the zip code of the insured or the location the car is registered.



The deadline for insurers to file their new rating structure has passed, mere days after a final appeal to block the new standards from taking effect were unsuccessful.
There was such a last-minute rush from insurance companies with newly revised rates, the California Insurance Department in Sacramento could not give a definite list as to which companies actually kept the deadline.
State officials would not disclose which companies filed to raise or lower their rates. State Farm has issued a news release describing the new rates they have proposed.
Bill Sirola, a spokesman for State Farm, has stated that the new rates are not tied to Garamendi’s new requirements. Sirola stated that the rate cuts are going into effect because the company is actually paying less in claims.

The weakness in new home prices was even sharper than a 2.5 percent fall in the price of existing homes last month, which had been the biggest drop on record.
The price decline for new homes came while the sales pace picked up, rising by 5.3 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate 1.075 million homes. It marked the second consecutive increase in sales following three months of declines.
The declines in prices served to underscore the severity of the correction in the once-booming housing market, which had seen sales of both new and existing homes soar to record levels for five consecutive years, propelled by the lowest mortgage rates in more than four decades.
This year, with mortgage rates rising through midsummer, sales have cooled considerably, with housing expected to trim more than a percentage point from overall growth in the last half of the year.
The debate is whether the slowdown will be enough to push the country into an outright recession. The Federal Reserve, recognizing the weakness in housing, halted a two-year string of interest rate increases in August and left rates unchanged for a third straight meeting on Wednesday.

sr22.nameWhen doing searches for SR22 filings on the internet, you will probably come across certain sites advertising "Free" SR22. Remember, nothing in life is free. You will not be able to get an SR22 filing without buying the insurance that is required to get an SR-22 Filing. Now, most insurance companies that issue SR22 filings do charge an SR22 Filing Fee which is on top of the insurance premium, but don't get hung up on that because the fee is nominal ($15, $20 or $25.) Also, the company that issues a policy without an SR22 Filing Fee may not have the best insurance rates. So in the end, it is very possible that you will pay more in the end when you get a "Free" SR22 filing.
